Art MacCord

Art MacCord has practiced as a patent attorney since 1978 and is a partner of MacCord Mason. The overriding principle that Mr. MacCord applies in his practice is that the properties involved are business assets. Thus, their value and the legal services associated with them must be measured by a business-like approach to their exploitation.

Mr. MacCord has gained expertise in a wide range of intellectual property disciplines. His experience includes advising clients on their options and assisting clients in obtaining the most profitable outcome, whether by licensing intellectual property or otherwise. The range of specific activities includes preparing applications and prosecuting them through the Patent and Trademark Office to obtain patents, managing a portfolio of existing patents, advising clients on patent validity and infringement questions and negotiating and administering specific licenses. He has also assisted clients with trademark and copyright registration, advice and, where necessary, litigation of intellectual property matters.

He has represented clients in the fields of website and internet-related businesses, building materials products, carpet technology, textiles, furniture, lighting equipment, computer software, environmental protection equipment, medical devices, mechanical and electromechanical devices. Additional areas of experience include motor vehicle improvements, safety equipment, point-of-sale displays, agricultural implements, gasoline dispensers, sports equipment, miscellaneous machinery and controls.

He has experience in domain name disputes, and numerous trademark matters including screening new marks for availability, obtaining registrations, trademark oppositions and cancellations, and trademark infringement controversies. He also has experience in licensing matters for a wide range of products.

Mr. MacCord has been admitted to the practice of law in the District of Columbia and the State of North Carolina, before the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He is a 1972 graduate of the University of Virginia in Charlottesville with a Bachelor of Arts in Physics. He received his Juris Doctor in 1978 from George Washington University, D.C.

Mr. MacCord is a member of the American Bar Association; Intellectual Property Law Section, North Carolina Bar Association; Intellectual Property Law Section, Greensboro Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association and Carolina Patent, Trademark and Copyright Law Association.
